Eight Things to Know Before Visiting Big South Fork

Eight Things to Know Before Visiting Big South Fork

1) You can bring your furry friends. Dogs are allowed within Big South Fork National Recreation Area, including the backcountry. However, they should be leashed at all times on a leash no longer than 6 feet.

2) Hunting is allowed at Big South Fork. Be aware of hunting seasons in Tennessee (or Kentucky depending on which part of the park you’re in). There are high traffic areas areas designated as no hunting but still always be mindful. Keep dogs in a hunter orange vest when hiking during hunting seasons.

3) You are not confined to the trails. You are allowed to go off-trail and explore the backcountry. It is well worth it as there is much in this massive park than can only be seen by getting off trail. However, do note that the vegetation in much of the park is very thick.

4) Be cautious of all wildlife. As always, especially if you’re going off-trail, be aware of all potential wildlife. Bear, elk, and deer top the list of some of the largest animals but also be cautious of smaller animals. There are two venomous snakes found within the park; copperheads and timber rattlesnakes.

5) There are cliffs everywhere. Seriously watch were you’re going. It is very easy to come upon a cliff edge without realizing it until you’re a few steps away.

6) There is more than just hiking and camping. There are opportunities for paddling, mountain biking, climbing, fishing, horseback riding, swimming, and historical sites to see.

7) Big South Fork has a long history in the moonshine business. Poverty in the area and stricter regulations further north pushed many moonshiners into the Cumberland Plateau. If you get off trail and follow water sources you can still find some remnants of these once illicit but very profitable activities.

8) It’s free!! That’s right it is free. There are no fees unless you want to go backcountry camping or some other special use permit is needed. No excuses. So go enjoy all this park has to offer.
